Fragments on Chinese Dreamcore is a research-based essay, focuses on the investigation of “Dreamcore” aesthetics within Chinese online subcultures. Written in early 2024, the essay traces how this visual trend grew rapidly during the strict COVID-19 lockdowns in China. The essay was combined with several interviews, comments and original art works to shape its spread. It reflects on why this style resonated so strongly at that specific moment, touching the political atmosphere and economic pressures, and of course, a shared longing for escape and nostalgia. The essay was self-published in 2024 and later presented at several art book fairs, where it was made available to readers and collectors.
